A Memory That Has Yet to Happen
A seat by the window. Coffee, a little cold.
The photograph brings back an afternoon spent with someone.
But when was it?
You have never been to this café.
The next day
“Nice to meet you,” you say, sitting across from them.
As you talk, you realize you are retracing yesterday’s memory.
When they leave the table for a moment, you photograph the two cups.
The composition is exactly the same as the photograph on your desk yesterday.
As you are leaving, they say:
“I’ve remembered this afternoon since yesterday, too.
But you weren’t supposed to come.”
The next day
You never go to the café.
At some point, the photograph disappears.
You can no longer remember who you were going to spend that afternoon with.

Absent Observer creates works from thought experiments that question the familiar.
Pause at the wonders we pass by every day,
and rediscover the pleasure of thinking itself.
OUR SYMBOL
At the center is a shape like an aperture that lets light through.
But there is no eye behind it.
We think we are seeing the world.
Before we know it, we mistake our way of seeing for the world itself.
That is why we want to leave this center open, unfilled by any single point of view.
The lines around it are paths to other vantage points.
If someone else stood at the center, how would the same world appear?
“Absent Observer” is a name that leaves the observer’s place open.
So that you can stand there, or step away.
